Full Moon in Gemini: A Restless Instinct

This month’s full moon falls in Gemini on 8th December (4.08am UK time), with the Moon in an exact conjunction to Mars, which will tend to activate the restless, inquiring and rather anxious Geminian nature. It also marks an accentutated moment within the Mars retrograde cycle. We are currently at the midpoint of that cycle, Mars having turned retrograde on 30th October, and remaining so until 12th January. The Moon-Mars conjunction is making a trine to Saturn in Aquarius, keeping us accountable for our actions.

As with all full moons, the Sun and Moon are in opposition with the Sun in far-seeing, far-reaching, big-picture oriented Sagittarius, and the Moon in buzzy, inquisitive, quick-witted, and easily distracted Gemini. The Sun and Moon occupy 16 degrees of their respective signs at the time of the full moon. There is an inevitable tension here between our faith in what is ethically right and true (Sagittarius) and the many viewpoints from which truth may be regarded and the many stories that can be spun around that (Gemini). The Sagittarian mantra is: "trust me, I know what’s true, I know what I'm doing, and it's for the good", whereas Gemini’s questioning response is "how do I know if I can I trust you? where's the evidence? And what if there’s more than one truth?”

The Sagittarian part in each of us wants to keep the faith, look beyond the current situation, and trust that better days are ahead, while the Gemini part needs dialogue, and is full of opinions, questions and doubts. The key here is the establishment of a proper perspective, for both of these signs can misjudge the size of things. Sagittarius can over-reach, or overestimate what is possible, and also underestimate the impact that clumsy or mis-informed actions can have on others; Gemini can become overwhelmed with data and fail to see the wood for the trees. An open dialogue is crucial here, where both the intuitive and the inquisitive approaches are admitted; one that allows that Geminian talent for information gathering to support and benefit from the directional thrust, energy and conviction that Sagittarius is famous for.

With Mars being such such a prominent player in the full moon picture this month, we might anticipate a more volatile edge to our emotional life, a irritable snappiness or reactivity. With Mars retrograde in Gemini we may need to manage our anger and direct our energy more mindfully, and really pay attention to where we are triggered. With the Moon-Mars conjunction also making an applying trine to Saturn in Aquarius, which brings in some structure and accountability, the need for a plan to bring things together so that this accelerated boost of energy can be put to some use.

Gemini is all about how we connect through ideas and language, and how we channel that effectively. With Gemini, there is always more than one way of looking at things, and it reminds us that we need to remain and open and flexible as new information emerges. But at the same time, we need to tend to the communication channel itself, and not let ourselves get ovewhelmed by the endless amounts of data available, which can be spun this way and that to prove or disprove just about anything. We need to be able to see the wood for the trees, and this is where the balancing tension with Sagittarius is so necessary so that we can chart a course toward a meaningful truth.

My Gemini mantra runs like this: “I am a messenger of Light, a conduit for the voice of my spirit twin to be heard.
