Sagittarius New Moon: Loosing the Arrow of Truth

We have a new moon in Sagittarius today (10.57pm UK time, 23rd Nov) as the Sun and Moon make their monthly conjunction, this time in the mutable fire sign where our spiritual or religious instincts are awakened as we reach for a higher sense of meaning and purpose.  This occurs in the very early degrees of the sign, with the sun having entered Sagittarius yesterday, bringing us into the season of Advent in the Christian calendar, where Christians anticipate the birth of Christ and pagans foresee the return of the light at the Winter Solstice.

Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, the planet of faith, meaning, joy and growth, and it seems pertinent that Jupiter stations direct today, in its home sign of Pisces.  So it really is a Jupiterian day today.  The Moon is separating from its trine aspect to Jupiter today, and with the new moon, it is applying to the conjunction of Mercury and Venus in Sagittarius, as we stretch our minds and elevate our hearts toward truth and the possibility of awakening to a new dawn.

In Sagittarius, our vision seeks to expand far and wide, the archer’s fiery arrow is trained on what lies beyond what we can ordinarily see, beyond the visible horizon.  We need to know not just what we are doing, but why we are doing it, and what is the meaning behind it.  The need for meaning is as fundamental to human life, as our need for nourishment and security.  Without it we are lost, aimless, in a kind of void. We need to be able to put our faith in something greater than the mundane rituals of our everyday lives, and Sagittarius, and its ruler Jupiter, holds the astrological energy for this. This regress of Jupiter into Pisces during this recent retrograde period, allows Jupiter to regain some of its more expansive and sublime qualities before launching himself again, with renewed zest and single-minded vigour into Mars's sign of Aries, where he will arrive, appropriately enough around the time of the Winter Solstice.

The great hope of this Sagittarius new moon is that we might be inspired to reconnect with what we inherently know to be true.  There are things about the nature of reality that are beyond doubt, values and truths that are part of the perennial wisdom tradition, things that are beyond cultural re-framing, abstract speculation or linguistic jingoism. So let's take the opportunity of this new moon to re-member what is true, and have the courage to call out what is evidently fake, corrupted, and without merit.

My mantra for Sagittarius runs:

"I know the way, I am guided by the stars, and I trust that my aim is true."
